The Bayeux Tapestry is a unique historical record, relating the events leading up to the Norman invasion of England, and culminating in the Battle of Hastings in 1066 between the armies of Harold, King of England, and William, Duke of Normandy. It is a primary source of historical information for the period and has been remarkably well preserved, having had various escapes from destruction on several occasions throughout its nine-hundred year history.

The original tapestry is about 68 metres (224 feet) long by 50cm (20) high and is the only masterpiece of its kind in the world. It is generally thought that the tapestry was made in the south of England before 1082, possibly at either Canterbury or Winchester, and thereafter transferred to Bayeux in Normandy, home of Williams half-brother, Odon de Conteville. The tapestry is in fact embroidery on a linen backcloth using wools of various colours.

This section of the tapestry depicts Duke William, accompanied by Earl Harold, setting out on a military campaign against Duke Conan II of Brittany. Passing Mont St. Michel off the coast of Normandy, they ride to the town of Dol. The Latin text reads HIC WILLEM DUX ET EXERCITUS EIUS VENERUNT AD MONTEM MICHAELIS which translates Here Duke William and his army came to Mont St. Michel. In recent years, the tapestry has been conserved and housed in a new purpose-built Museum at Bayeux.

This beautiful tapestry is woven on a jacquard loom by skilled weavers, keeping alive the centuries old tradition of tapestry manufacturing from generation to generation. This tapestry is fully lined incorporating a sleeve along the top for hanging with a Hines hanging rod. Alternatively, this tapestry can be hung with a wooden batten which is a concealed method of hanging.

How to hang a tapestry

Tapestries are very simple to hang in your home.  There are a two options for you to choose from which are explained below.

Decorative Tapestry Hanging Rod

Choose from two finial options, Black Spear or Brass Fleur de Lys to hang your tapestry.  Simply slide your hanging rod through the rod pocket that is sewn along the top edge of the back of the tapestry so that the finials and some of the black bar is showing either side.  (You can have as much or as little of the back bar as you wish showing as the hanging rods are telescopic).

Once you are happy with where you want the tapestry to hang, mark on the wall through the eyelets on each finial where you need to drill the wall.  Then simply drill and plug both holes and then screw your tapestry to the wall.

Hines tapestry hanging rods are specially designed to be flush-mounted to the wall securing the tapestry in the best way possible to ensure that it looks great for years to come.

Obscure Wooden Batten

If you would rather fix your tapestry to the wall without any decorative rod you need to select a wooden batten when adding your tapestry to the basket.  Each batten is cut to size specifically for your tapestry and works on the same principle as a decorative hanging rod with a pre-drilled hole at each end to fix to the wall.

All decorative hanging rods and wooden battens from Hines come with screws and plugs and a set of instructions how to fit to your wall.
