This tapestry is one from the series known as The Hunts of the Emperor Maximilian, an Austrian Emperor who lived in the second half of the sixteenth century. These tapestries were woven from Bernard Van Orleys designs in workshops at Brussels during the 16th Century, and it was Van Orley, who was also known as Bernard of Brussels, that became famous for this series of tapestries. Charles V commissioned him to produce several compositions and he was asked to celebrate, in tapestry form, various important events at the Court of Emperor Maximilian: festivals, promenades and forest hunts. The setting of the Court Hunt is the Soignes Forest near Brussels in Belgium.

This tapestry is fully lined incorporating a sleeve along the top for hanging with a Hines hanging rod. Alternatively, this tapestry can be hung with a wooden batten which is a concealed method of hanging.
