This tapestry is one of a set of fourteen tapestries depicting the History of the King Louis X1V of France who was king from 1643 until his death in 1715. His reign was a distinguished one and this series of tapestries was commissioned to commemorate the most important episodes during this period.

The tapestries were woven at the Gobelins Manufactory in Paris, a Royal Atelier, and are regarded as that workshops finest mid-seventeenth century set. Designed by Charles le Brun, the Director of the Gobelins from 1662 to 1690, the tapestries were commenced in 1665 and depicted the major events, and detailed with great accuracy the elaborate court ceremonials, the rich costumes of the period, dramatic elements in national functions and the appearance of notable figures.

The inscription at the bottom of the tapestry translates as follows:- Defeat of the Spanish army near the Bruges Canal by the troops of King Louis X1V under the direction of Marsin, in the year 1667. The tapestry is currently at the Salon de Mercure in the Museum of Versailles in France.

Silk screened tapestries are also known as serigraphic tapestries. Each silk-screened tapestry is serigraphed onto irregularly woven fabric (wool, cotton or linen). Considerable labour is required with this process, including hand-painting to finish the details. Silk screen tapestries appear antiqued and aged giving them the look and feel of tapestries that hang in museums today.

How to hang a tapestry

Tapestries are very simple to hang in your home.  There are a two options for you to choose from which are explained below.

Decorative Tapestry Hanging Rod

Choose from two finial options, Black Spear or Brass Fleur de Lys to hang your tapestry.  Simply slide your hanging rod through the rod pocket that is sewn along the top edge of the back of the tapestry so that the finials and some of the black bar is showing either side.  (You can have as much or as little of the back bar as you wish showing as the hanging rods are telescopic).

Once you are happy with where you want the tapestry to hang, mark on the wall through the eyelets on each finial where you need to drill the wall.  Then simply drill and plug both holes and then screw your tapestry to the wall.

Hines tapestry hanging rods are specially designed to be flush-mounted to the wall securing the tapestry in the best way possible to ensure that it looks great for years to come.

Obscure Wooden Batten

If you would rather fix your tapestry to the wall without any decorative rod you need to select a wooden batten when adding your tapestry to the basket.  Each batten is cut to size specifically for your tapestry and works on the same principle as a decorative hanging rod with a pre-drilled hole at each end to fix to the wall.

All decorative hanging rods and wooden battens from Hines come with screws and plugs and a set of instructions how to fit to your wall.

When i received this tapestry i wasn't happy because i was expecting a woven tapestry not a Silk Screened one. I had decided to contact Hines of Oxford to return this tapestry. Had couple of mail exchanges with the company, they were very helpful. After looking at the other tapestries, i decided to keep the one i got. Now i am very happy with my decision, this tapestry is beautiful and has beautiful colours. It's looks like a antique on the wall. Thank you... (Posted on 23/03/2016)

I have now decided to keep my Silk Screened tapestry. The woven textured tapestry’s colour is much more brighter and it look’s like new. Also it is much smaller. I have seen the original tapestry and the Silk Screened reproduction’s colours are similar. The tapestry looks great on the wall, the colours are beautiful and when you look from the distant it looks like antique. (Posted on 16/03/2016)
