This tapestry was designed and produced by William Morris (1836-1896), the famous British artist and designer. It was woven circa 1885 on a high-warp loom, at Merton Abbey, Surrey.

William Morris became well-known for his designs in the decorative arts and in development of various crafts, particularly tapestry-weaving. Favouring Medievalism and using the painstaking methods of the craftsman, he adapted the arts of the Middle Ages for the modern world at the end of the 19th Century. Morris re-introduced quality and style in the decorative arts, and experimented with vegetable dyes, developing a unique palette. From studying an old French Arts and Crafts manual, Morris taught himself the technique of weaving, and thereafter taught his workmen the technique, and is thereby attributed with reviving the craft of tapestry-weaving in England during the last quarter of the 19th century.

The decorating firm of Morris, Marshall, Faulk & Co was established by William Morris in 1861 at Merton Abbey in Surrey, and became Morris & Company after 1874. J. H. Dearle became the artistic director of the company after Morriss death in 1896.

This beautiful tapestry is woven on a jacquard loom by skilled weavers, keeping alive the centuries old tradition of tapestry manufacturing from generation to generation. This tapestry is fully lined incorporating a sleeve along the top for hanging with a Hines hanging rod. Alternatively, this tapestry can be hung with a wooden batten which is a concealed method of hanging.

How to hang a tapestry

Tapestries are very simple to hang in your home.  There are a two options for you to choose from which are explained below.

Decorative Tapestry Hanging Rod

Choose from two finial options, Black Spear or Brass Fleur de Lys to hang your tapestry.  Simply slide your hanging rod through the rod pocket that is sewn along the top edge of the back of the tapestry so that the finials and some of the black bar is showing either side.  (You can have as much or as little of the back bar as you wish showing as the hanging rods are telescopic).

Once you are happy with where you want the tapestry to hang, mark on the wall through the eyelets on each finial where you need to drill the wall.  Then simply drill and plug both holes and then screw your tapestry to the wall.

Hines tapestry hanging rods are specially designed to be flush-mounted to the wall securing the tapestry in the best way possible to ensure that it looks great for years to come.

Obscure Wooden Batten

If you would rather fix your tapestry to the wall without any decorative rod you need to select a wooden batten when adding your tapestry to the basket.  Each batten is cut to size specifically for your tapestry and works on the same principle as a decorative hanging rod with a pre-drilled hole at each end to fix to the wall.

All decorative hanging rods and wooden battens from Hines come with screws and plugs and a set of instructions how to fit to your wall.

Morris Tapestries Review by JW
I ordered 2 William Morris tapestries from Hines and I was very impressed with the quality. I did purchase one previously on an auction website (same design and similar price) and was very disappointed with the quality so I returned it and purchased it from Hines. I wish I did that in the first place!

Items were very well and attractively packaged with ribbon. The laminated information board was a welcome touch and not expected.

Very happy with items and service and if I need anything from you in the future I will order again.
