This tapestry captures the essence of the ancient legend of King Arthur, thought to have lived in the 5th or 6th Century, although often associated with the Medieval Renaissance. Chivalry reached its peak in the 15th Century at the Royal Courts of England and France. Such Courts founded great Orders of Chivalry such as the Order of the Garter and the Order of the Golden Fleece, which were based solely on the Arthurian theme. These great Courts held chivalric spectacles and tournaments that lasted sometimes for weeks; it is not difficult to imagine the sight of knights in cloth of gold carrying painted silk damask banners and wearing armour, sometime gilded, sometimes bejewelled the brightly coloured heraldic banners and the gilded pinnacles of the castle towers glittering in the sun. The tapestry shows King Arthur as he would have possibly been depicted had a tapestry been commissioned by the Duke of Burgundy in the late 15th century. On the right, Merlin leans through a doorway leading to the forest, and views a scene in a courtly garden where Arthur, watched by his future Queen Guinevere, pulls the sword from the stone, thereby identifying himself as the rightful King. King Arthur is then depicted as crowned and carrying the sword and entering the many towerd Camelot. He emerges with his Knights of the Round Table, with banners flying and trumpets sounding for his departure on the Quest. However, he is watched by his half-sister Morgana le Fay who plots his downfall, and the path King Arthur pursues will eventually take him to meet Sir Mordred the Black Knight, with whom he will engage in the Last Battle. Finally, the mortally wounded King will be carried by the Lady of the Lake to the Isle of Apples known as Avalon.

This beautiful tapestry is woven on a jacquard loom by skilled weavers, keeping alive the centuries old tradition of tapestry manufacturing from generation to generation. This tapestry is fully lined incorporating a sleeve along the top for hanging with a Hines hanging rod. Alternatively, this tapestry can be hung with a wooden batten which is a concealed method of hanging.
